Dealerships that can attentively and properly adjust with the times will prosper short-term and long-term while others fall short; maintain your dealerships long-term goals, the vehicle sales market will recover, as it has always done. The consumer will always need a vehicle even if they become ever more watchful about how they purchase.
Listed below are a few basic considerations to keep in-mind when considering the modification of your automotive personnel staffing needs. Not all will fit your specific needs, but will simply remind and assist you in determining which course of action best works for your dealership and will deliver real financial results.
Cost-Conscious Automotive Personnel Expense Management Strategies
Laying-Off Dealership Employees - There still is an ongoing cost ...
When a dealership lays-off an employee they believe that it eliminates the total cost of that employee. That's not true ... Within many states it simply creates a state unemployment insurance-tax billing, whereas the employer is now responsible for a portion and possibly a 100% of the unemployment benefits paid the x-employee, while also experiencing an increased UI experience rating, increasing the dealerships tax liability. In-turn the dealership is paying for someone that is doing nothing to improve the dealerships bottom-line.
Accounting & Support Staff, Non-Income Producing - Watch your Bottom-Line ...
After being in the automotive business for over 25 years I continue to run into the Old School of thought, which is the first targeted area for personnel lay-offs, is within the Automotive Support – Accounting Staff, this could be one of the upper management’s biggest mistakes. An automotive dealer must remember that Sales and Gross Profit are great, but the real deciding factor in a dealerships survival is the Net Profit – Bottom-Line on a dealerships financial statement. If it appears there is a lack of work, they need management directions; Collect on Aging Receivables, Analyze Existing Auto Dealership Financial Trends, Prepare for Tax Year-End, Review Dealership Compliance Issues overlooked during busier times, Analyze Vendor Expenditure, and review Internal Operational Audit and Control Procedures. Keep everybody honest during stressful times.
Mechanical Technicians – Can and are you going to be able to replace them ...
Cutback on the number of mechanical technicians you have within your service department, absolutely insane. For years, dealerships have spent thousands of dollars and struggled trying to Recruit Body Shop and Mechanical Technicians. Now may be the best time to aggressively recruit from struggling competing dealerships, hardworking qualified Body and Mechanical Technicians. Review individual Tech Productivity during busier times, than attempt your replacement and recruiting process. As for now, properly manage the distribution of body and mechanical work available so that guarantee is not an issue, while continuing to offer extensive training to the Body and Mechanical Technicians with the greatest future revenue potential.
Automotive Sales Personnel – Find the best and dominate your vehicle sales market ...
It’s going to be difficult. Vehicle sales have tumbled, no immediate recovery insight, this automotive personnel expenditure should be extensively analyzed. The Old School idea of increasing the auto sales staff size will sell more vehicles will probably not work anymore. As for now, calculate the true cost of each automotive sales person, pay extremely close attention to closing ratios, and remember your top performers need to make a living. Once again, now may be the time to aggressively recruit from struggling competing automotive dealers, Automotive Sales people which have become dissatisfied with their current position and have a loyal following customer base.
Hopefully the above has enlighted you and remember .....
Employees are people; they have hearts and souls, families to care for, and are usually willing to compromise, if given the respect they deserve when times get difficult. As an automotive manager or dealership owner it's best to review all financial variables and alternatives before eliminating automotive personnel. Suggest cutbacks in scheduled hours, temporary wage freezes, review individual perks created over the years, possibly even temporary pay reductions, and properly manage your business as a whole. Beware of Self-Interest.
